Sayed Quraishi is a Medical Student who participated in this program. We think his answers are very honest and very thought-provoking and very sensible. He says, “We need to show our true face to the world and not pretend that we’re not upset when we are. We also need to have less and less social interaction which can potentially lead to severe isolation and depression. We also need to prioritize some of our daily activities, like studying, and to stop being too distracted by other things like Internet and mobile phones, thus impacting our academic performance”. He adds, “We have immense potential as a human race but we tend to bury ourselves in our own problems, internalize our misery and eventually disconnect from ourselves and the world around us. We are affecting each other’s mental well-being through our own thoughts and actions. We are all connected and no one can do anything about it alone. We need to start realizing and accepting the fact that we all suffer from depression and can only help each other.

A few other studies have also highlighted the increasing incidence of mental illness across the globe. A World Health Organisation (WHO) report titled Mental Health and Illness – Statistics 2014 says, that in 2013, the prevalence of major depression in adults aged between 15-64 years was around 16.4%, while the prevalence of anxiety disorder in the same age group was 6.5%. India has one of the highest rates of depression globally.
